About Bitopia

Bitopia is a limited liability company specialising in the provision of professional affordable IT services. The company is the creation of its Managing Director, Steven Smith, an IT professional with over 15 years experience in computer systems. Steven started his career as an apprentice Instrument Artificer at ICI Nobel's Explosives in Ayrshire, Scotland. After completing his 4 year apprenticeship he found work in the North Sea Oil & Gas industry as an Instrument Technician before returning to university to complete his Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

Steven then became involved in the commissioning of large scale Distributed Control Systems on various projects around the world, predominantly in the Oil and Gas Industry. It was on one such project that Steven bumped into an old friend, Paul McCormack, a software engineer he'd previously worked with on a major Control System Upgrade project onboard the Dunlin Alpha, a live oil and gas production platfrom in the North Sea.

Steven and Paul decided to collaborate on a new business venture developing PC based control systems using the QNX operating system as a highly reliable base. Unfortunately the project was to run out of funding before it really took off. However, in the mean time the two had been supplementing their income by providing IT support and database development services to local companies and this proved to be the way forward.

In 2001 Steven moved to St Helens to set up home with his future wife. Shortly after the move Steven and Paul (still good friends) agreed it would be easier to go their own seperate roads in business. In spring 2002 Steven set up Bitopia Ltd. (B-IT-OPIA) to deliver 'Business IT with Vision', OPIA being derived from the Greek word for Eye.

Bitopia, now approaching the end of its fifth year, has grown steadily by ensuring customers are always dealt with professionally, politely and above all... honestly.
