Leaving Bitopia

Posted by Jez McKean

So I'm off to pastures new.

I've worked at Bitopia since October 2006, and leave at the end of this week.

In that time we've moved to a new office, been joined by 5 new members of staff (and had two French exchange students) and have been chosen to provide a variety of hardware and software by various loyal and new clients.

I'm a web developer, and occasional graphic designer, and I have learned a lot in my time here.
The web developement language PHP is my forté (and what we developers use the most). For the database interaction we use MySQL. The variety of clients we has required that I learn a lot of new techniques in both of these while working here.

Since the web is such a fast evolving arena, we're constantly learning and developing our methods, whether they be styling with CSS or creating rich interaction through Ajax (the buzzword of 2007, and staple of web apps ever since).

My first project when I joined Bitopia was Saints' website. It was the biggest website I'd ever worked on, and probably still is. As with many sites, the real bulk of the work goes into creating the admin area, or back-end, which allows the owners to update content, create new articles and so on. The specifics of what a website needs to convey dictate the requirements of both the public front-end and the back-end. Creating an interface to make this as easy as possible is the challenge which I enjoy, and is often called HCI (Human-Computer Interaction).
Last week, we watched Saints beat Castleford Tigers 68-12. The evening got even better for me when I was  unexpectedly presented with a personalised and signed replica shirt by Saints player (and previous captain) Paul Sculthorpe. (That's him on the left of the photo up there.) Many thanks to Christian (our Commercial manager) for arranging this.

I will miss the 'B' Team when I go, but am glad to have had the experience of working with them all.

With many thanks to everyone at Bitopia,
   Jez
